BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – Four people were injured and a dog died following a crash on eastbound Route 78 this morning, shortly before 11:30 a.m.

According to Berkeley Heights Deputy Fire Chief Jim Hopkins, two of those injured had broken legs, one had a broken wrist and another had a minor injury. 

Firefighters performed CPR on a dog, but were unable to revive the animal.

Firefighters from Berkeley Heights and Watchung Fire departments responded to the scene.

Ambulances from Berkeley Heights, Union County, Springfield and Atlantic Health EMS crews were at the scene of the accident and transported all but one of the patients to Overlook Medical Center. One patient with a broken leg was transported to University Hospital in Newark.

The accident took place at mile marker 42.8, just over the Plainfield Avenue bridge in Berkeley Heights.
