BASKING RIDGE, NJ – Experiences in social responsibility and giving back are especially important during the formative teenage years. To give teens those experiences,  Somerset Hills YMCA is offering a service learning volunteerism program this July.

As a cause-driven organization, the Y embraces social responsibility and believes in the power of giving back to neighbors to strengthen the community.

To encourage teens to be socially responsible, Somerset Hills YMCA is offering “Teen Volunteers in Action.”  In the program, teens will experience first-hand how volunteerism benefits the community through working with veterans and seniors, performing acts of kindness for local families and doing environmental work.

Teens ages 13 to 16 can sign up for a five-day or a three-day session, or both. The three-day session is from July 21 - 23, while the 5-day program is from July 27 -31.

“To develop into responsible, caring citizens, teens need opportunities to make a difference in their communities. Not only will Teen Volunteers in Action allow them to contribute their energy, passion and skills to making a positive impact on the lives of others, but group discussions reflecting on the daily activities will help them learn terrific life lessons,” said Sylvia Velez, Director of Member and Volunteer Engagement.

The times for the three-day sessions are: July 21, 9:30 a.m. to noon, July 22 and 23, 1:30 to 4 p.m. The times for the five-day sessions: are July 27-30, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., and July 31, 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $50 for the shorter session, and $85 for the five-day session.
