WARREN, NJ – The Harlem Wizards will play a team of teachers from the four Warren Township K-5 schools at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, at Watchung Hills Regional High School (WHRHS).

The event is a fundraiser to support Project A.L.S., the designated charity of the year for the WHRHS All Student Council.

For more information and tickets, contact WHRHS student government advisor Maureen Kelly at mkelly@whrhs.org, or at (908) 528-2961.

Kelly has been working with the principals of the four Warren Township K-5 schools, Kathryn Bond at Angelo L. Tomaso (ALT), Alison Watkins at Central, Scott Cook at Mount Horeb, and Jeff Heaney at Woodland, on the planning of this fundraising event.

Last summer, all WHRHS students read, “Tales from the Bed: A Memoir,” by Jenifer Estess, as told to her sister, Valerie Estess. It is a book about Jenifer Estess’ battle with the disease called A.L.S. (Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis). The Estess family began Project A.L.S. to help fund leading-edge research into discovering effective treatments and a cure for A.L.S. The WHRHS student government made raising awareness and funds for Project A.L.S. the focus of its fundraising efforts for this school year.

The Harlem Wizards are a basketball team specializing in entertaining banter and interaction with the audience, as well as trick passing plays, spectacular “alley oop” dunks, and one-of-a-kind shot selections.

Tojo, a featured player for the Harlem Wizards, held assemblies at each of the four Warren Township schools on Tuesday, March 8, to speak with the students about the fundraising game on April 5. During the assemblies, selected students participated in games, and some won Harlem Wizards merchandise and tickets to the fundraiser.

To increase projected funds for Project A.L.S., the All School Council is offering a prize to the elementary school with the most students in attendance at the game on April 5. The All School Council will grant the winners accordingly: First Prize, $500; second prize, $250. The prize money will be used for the elementary school at the discretion of the elementary school’s principal.

Among the Warren Township teachers expected to play against the Harlem Wizards will be: From ALT School, Amanda Gordon, Brittany Leonard, Joe Larramendia, Sanjita Livingston, and Kathryn Bond; from Central School, Steve Rizzoli, Laura Lamson and Megan O’Donnell; from Mount Horeb School, Paul “Slam” Duncan, Bre Maughan, and Beth Maag; and from Woodland School, Anita Bower and Jeff Heaney.

Tickets are: Advance, students $12, and general admission, $15; at the door, students $15, and general admission, $18; reserved, $20; and courtside plus, $25. Harlem Wizards souvenirs will be available at the game. For more information about the Harlem Wizards, go to www.harlemwizards.com.
