On Sunday, May 22, Pilgrim Congregational Church invites the public to attend a very special service of worship, a Jazz Vespers service.
A jazz vespers was first conceived to enable jazz musicians who were out late playing gigs on Saturday night to be able to have a time of worship on Sunday. That is why it is held on Sunday evening, after they have had time to catch up on their sleep, and features so much of the music that jazz musicians love.
The worship service begins at 6 pm and will include the reading of scripture, the offering of prayer and the singing of spirituals. Under the direction of Tom Paster, choir director, the Pilgrim Church Chancel Choir will sing several moving and inspirational anthems featuring soloists Nicole Dickinson, soprano, and Dante Sterling, tenor, and accompanied by organist Nicholas Tino, Jr.. The vespers will also feature a jazz trio from Northern Highlands Regional High School where Mr. Paster is a music teacher. The jazz trio will play the prelude and postlude.
The tempo will be uplifting and attendees will be swinging. Music selections will include Agnus Dei and Gloria by Paul Basler, He Never Failed Me Yet and Hallelujah Praise the Lord by Robert Ray as well as several traditional spirituals.
Following the service of worship, light refreshments will be served in the Narthex.
