Mark your calendars for the upcoming Primary Election on Tuesday, June 6, 2017. New Jersey has a closed primary system, meaning only voters who are registered members of a political party may participate in nominating that party's candidates. Currently only the Democratic and Republican parties hold primary elections - other parties nominate their candidates in different ways.
If you are currently a registered voter affiliated with a political party, but want to switch your affiliation before the primary election, you must do so by April 12, 2017. You must file a Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form with your county Commissioner of Registration/Superintendent of Elections to change party affiliations.
If you are not currently affiliated with a political party you may declare up to and including Primary Election Day at the polls. If you are unsure of your party affiliation you can contact your Commissioner of Registration/Superintendent of Elections.
The League of Women Voters of New Jersey has developed this New Jersey Primary Election Guide at a Glance to help answer some of the most common questions about our primary election system. We have also published this blog post to help address voters' questions.
The deadline to register to vote or change your address for the upcoming June primary is May 16, 2017. Voter registration forms are available here.
