BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Leather Necks defeated the Devil Dogs, 20–7, Thursday in the 5th Annual Basilone Bowl at Basilone Field in Bridgewater.

The finest senior football players from all the high schools in Somerset County, including three from Watchung Hills Regional High School and three from North Plainfield High School, were chosen to play in the game, which honors Raritan Marine John Basilone.

Gunnery Sgt. Basilone is known for his courage on the battlefield and was awarded the Medal of Honor at the Battle of Guadalcanal and the Navy Cross in World War II.

Proceeds from the game go to the Basilone Memorial Foundation.

Somerville's Chris Ciempola was named his team's Offensive MVP after snagging two touchdown passes, while quarterback Steve Gribben, of Bernards, was the Overall MVP for throwing two touchdown passes.

The defensive team MVP was Stuart Cundiff, of Immaculata.

Bridgewater-Raritan's Nick Attanasio was named the Offensive MVP for the Devil Dogs after scoring the team's only touchdown. Matt Alesandro, of Bridgewater-Raritan was the team's Defensive MVP, and T.J. Caswell, of Manville, was the team's Overall MVP.
