NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The second Lisa Del Negro Memorial Golf Outing will take place Thursday, Sept. 20. Scheduled to take place on the green at the Royce Brook Golf Club, the event will raise funds and awareness of suicide prevention and pay tribute to the late Lisa Del Negro of North Plainfield, who sadly took her life in July 2014 at the age of 25.

Proceeds from the golf outing will go to the Lisa Del Negro Memorial Scholarship Fund; each year, Lisa’s family awards a scholarship to a graduating senior, male or female, who plans to attend an institute of higher learning and who has played a total of two years in a specific sport during their high school career, including one year at the varsity level.

Lisa, a 2007 graduate of North Plainfield High School who also attended Sacred Heart School in South Plainfield, was the loving daughter of the late Gail Kaufman-Cain and a loyal friend to many as well as an excellent student, athlete, and first responder. A certified Emergency Medical Technician, Lisa was a volunteer member of the North Plainfield Volunteer Fire Company and, at the time of her death, was working as a per diem EMT for the North Plainfield Fire Rescue Department and had recently secured a position with JFK Medical Center in Edison.

“We established this fund in loving memory of Lisa. She lived her life to please those around her [and] served her town with pride and dedication,” said Lisa’s late mom Gail when planning the first outing back in 2015. “Lisa was a loving daughter, a loyal friend, and an outstanding athlete and student. She was also a first responder and had a heart that touched the lives of many.”

According the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) website (, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States with close to 45,000 lives claimed each year with an average of 128 suicides occurring each day. “There is no single cause to suicide,” states the AFSP. “It most often occurs when stressors exceed current coping abilities of someone suffering from a mental health condition.”

“Lisa was my best friend. We laughed, we cried, but most importantly, I like to think that we made memories to last a lifetime. Lisa lived her life to please those around her,” said Cara Jones, adding that the overall goal of the outing and the scholarship is to remember Lisa and help others.

“Our hope is to look past the stigmatisms of suicide, for it is not ‘how and why could she do this,’ but how and what we can do as a community to raise the awareness of mental health and suicide prevention,” said Jones.

This year’s Lisa Del Negro Memorial Golf Outing will include a Tavern on the Tee lunch, 18 holes of golf, a golf cart equipped with GPS yardage, putting green, driving range, scramble format, hole-in-one contests, top team trophy, door prizes, and a buffet dinner. Registration begins at 11 a.m. followed by lunch at 11:30 a.m. and a 1 p.m. shot gun start. Dinner will be held at 6 p.m.

The cost is $640 per foursome; $160 for individual golfers. Those who do not golf but who still which to support the event can attend dinner only; the cost is $50 per guest. Additionally, a wide range of donation and hole and event sponsorship opportunities are available.
