NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ — As Maggie Heteji Grabko awaits a life-saving liver transplant, a GoFundMe page has been created to help her family deal with the costs associated with hospitalization, and the Watchung Hills Elks are hosting a fundraiser, the Maggie Grabko Dinner and Music Fundraiser, at 1 Elks Trail in Warren on June 24.
Grabko and her husband, Shawn Grabko, live in North Plainfield with their two children, 12-year-old Ella and 13-year-old William, and are a part of the Watchung Hills Pop Warner family. In the past, she has worked as a counselor at Camp Harmony in Warren and currently works as a special education preschool teacher at Westfield’s Lincoln School.
“Like most who have to deal with a crisis, we never imagined being in this position and certainly weren’t prepared financially for what was to come,” the Grabko family wrote on GoFundMe. “We don’t live in a grand house, we don’t take elaborate vacations and we spend most time trying to find a way to make ends meet to cover basic expenses. Sadly, this has totally exhausted all of our resources. Not only are the medical procedures coming with profound expenses that aren’t covered by insurance, but also the sad fact that Maggie has no paid time off due to the fact that she just started a new job at the Westfield Public Schools this year.”
Since the GoFundMe page was created on June 5, more than $60,000 has been raised.
“Everyone has been so lovely and generous,” Grabko’s mother, Bobbi Heteji, said.
