WEST TRENTON, NJ - New Jersey State Police plan to set up a DWI sobriety checkpoint on the Garden State Parkway on Saturday evening, and drivers should expect delays while troopers conduct the safety initiative, authorities say.
The checkpoint will be near the PNC Bank Arts Center, on the northbound side of the Garden State Parkway in Holmdel.
According to a release by the New Jersey State Police, there were 79 crashes that involved alcohol on the Parkway in the area patrolled by the State Police Holmdel Station in 2014- nine fatal. Of the nine fatal crashes, three involved alcohol.
Between 2012 and 2014, police made more than 1,000 alcohol-related arrests near the arts center, State Police said.
Troopers will be looking for signs of impairment. Make sure to have a designated driver.
“Enhanced DWI enforcement on the Garden State Parkway will serve as a deterrent to people who may be inclined to take the wheel after having too much to drink,” Lt. Colonel Patrick Callahan, Deputy Superintendent, said in a prepared statement. “We are confident that taking impaired drivers off the road will reduce the overall number of crashes in the area.”
