Oxford Taps Warren's WHRHS, Will Add "Upstander" to Dictionary

Oxford Will Add "Upstander" to Dictionary Credits: B. Nemcek

WARREN, NJ - Hard work pays off.  "Upstander" will be added to the Oxford Dictionaries this year.

Watchung Hills Regional High School graduates Monica Mahal and Sarah Decker began fighting bullying by encouraging their peers to be upstanders and working to raise awareness by joining Senator Kean’s effort to add “upstander” to the dictionary.

Senator Tom Kean Jr. posted, "I was so inspired by the anti-bullying initiatives at Watchung Hills Regional High School that I sponsored a bill urging Oxford to take action. Very proud of the local students who never gave up this fight. Hard work pays off!"

"Led by teachers Jamie Lott-Jones and Mary Sok, Watchung Hills Regional High School has become a model for Facing History and Ourselves partnerships. In a school of 2,200 students, Jamie and Mary's classrooms have become incubators for creating upstanders, said Peter Nelson, FHAO Director. Watchung Hills students have led the effort to get the word upstander in the dictionary and in 2013 created ‘White Out,’ a district-wide effort to raise awareness of bullying and promote tolerance.”

Watchung Hills Regional High School graduates and teachers were presented with Upstander Awards at the Facing History and Ourselves (FHAO) 21st Anniversary.
