WARREN, NJ – WHRHS Lady Warrior Robin McCabe was perfect. The right-hand hurler retired all 21 Pingry batters to lead Watchung Hills to a 7-0 victory over Pingry. McCabe’s flawless performance, included 14 strikeouts, sends the Lady Warriors into the semifinals of the Somerset County Tournament.

“McCabe is always very good, but today she was perfect,
said Lady Warriors coach Mike D’ Alessandro. “We knew we were going up against a good pitcher and we would need to score some runs. We were able to do that early in the game, and McCabe was on cruise control."

D’ Alessandro was right. McCabe was on cruise control. She was able to get ahead on nearly every count, and the few times she did fall behind in a count she was able to make her pitch.

“One of my teammates told me I had a perfect game in the fifth inning,” said a beaming McCabe after the game. “The whole team was up for the game. We had great energy, everyone was loud, and we played great defense.”

The Lady Warriors were up for the game. They scored two runs in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Izzy Definis did much of the damage at the plate for Watchung Hills going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Pingry’s Katie Marino pitched well, but took the loss. Watchung Hills took advantage of some poor infield play to tack on runs against Marino.

The Notre Dame bound Marino told TAPinto Watchung she had never faced McCabe before. In the seventh Marino was able to work the count to 3-1 before hitting a sky high fly to left. “I never faced Robin before,” said Marino. “I needed to make an adjustment, but I made it a little too late.”

“I really think this game came down to hitting,” said Pingry head coach Chip Carver. “They put the ball in play, Katie pitched a great game, but we just didn’t get it done at the plate. Watchung Hills did a great job.”

Coach D’ Alessandro after the game told TAPinto Watchung the key going forward is much of the same. “We know we can compete with anybody,” said D’ Alessandro. “If we swing the bats we will be o.k. Our pitching is always strong, our defense is generally tight, so if we score some runs we should do well.”

If McCabe continues to pitch like she did today, the Lady Warriors won’t need to score too many runs to keep playing in May.
