Peter S. Piro, Sr., 72, of South Plainfield passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Born on June 22, 1941 in New York, NY to Salvatore and Josephine (Stanislao) Piro, he was a life-long resident of South Plainfield.
Mr. Piro was a detective with the South Plainfield Police Department, serving for 30 years prior to his retirement in 1997. He was the first recipient of the Officer of the Year award in 1984 and a member of the South Plainfield P.B.A. Local 100. Peter was a proud member of the US Army and a graduate of the South Plainfield High School. Mr. Piro was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Italian American Club in South Plainfield.
Mr. Piro is survived by his loving wife, Joan Piro of Monroe Township, his four beloved sons; Peter S. Piro, Jr. and his wife Christina of Monroe Township, David J. Piro and his wife Bessie of Warren, Michael P. Piro and his wife Stacey of Watchung and Christopher J. Piro and his wife Susan of South Plainfield. Peter is also survived by his eleven cherished grandchildren and his two beloved brothers, Monico and Joseph Piro.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Jan. 23rd from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm at the South Plainfield Funeral Home, 2456 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10am at the Church of the Sacred Heart in South Plainfield. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.
