NORTH PLAINFIELD – Detectives are investigating a fatal hit and run that occurred early Tuesday morning,Somerset County Prosecutor Michael Robertson, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives John Fodor and North Plainfield Chief of Police William Parenti said in a release. 

They provided the following account:

North Plainfield Police responded to the area of 50-54 Watchung Avenue, in North Plainfield on a report of a pedestrian beginning struck by a motor vehicle that fled the area. Responding officers located the victim, Jose Humberto Burgos, age 58, of Plainfield who was hit by a motor vehicle while he was attempting to cross Watchung Avenue.

Burgos was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital/New Brunswick where he was pronounced deceased, authorities said.

Law enforcement authorities are asking for the public’s help. Anyone who was in the area at 1:00 a.m. and witnessed this incident, or observed a vehicle fleeing towards Plainfield at a high rate of  speed is  asked to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office at (908) 231-7100 or the North Plainfield BoroughPolice Department at (908) 769-2937.
