Sabattis Saved: Boy Scouts' Adventure Camp to Remain Open After Patriots’ Paths Council Executive Board Vote

CEDAR KNOLLS, NJ -- The Patriots’ Paths Council Executive Board met on Monday, Sept. 18 in a special session to discuss the future operation of Sabattis Adventure Camp, which was threatened with closure.

After thorough and thoughtful discussion, the Board voted to continue Sabbatis camping activities through the end of the 2019 summer camping season. The Board discussed the results presented to them by a special task force commissioned by Council President George Barnard, which had met over the last year. 

"Patriots' Path Council's Executive Board has determined that the work of the Sabattis Task Force will continue until after the 2019 summer camping season. At that time the task force and the board will work together to evaluate the camp's progress," said David McIntyre, Assistant Scoutmaster, Troop 104 in Scotch Plains, and Executive Board member, Patriots' Path Council.

"If attendance is significantly increased and a number of capital projects have been completed I would expect the camp to continue operating. If our attendance levels haven't meaningfully increased, I'd expect that the board would vote to close the camp."

When word spread of the possibility that Sabbatis Adventure Camp might end, many scouts and scouters (adults) mobilized to try to save the camp. One group filed a petition on Change.org.

Sabattis Advenutre Camp is the most beautiful and life changing camp that Patriot's Path Council has to offer BY FAR! It is a true gem that we cannot afford to lose! Scouts and Scouters get to experience the serenity of the Adirondack Mountains while earning merit badges, kayaking in Bear Pond, doing sea plane excursions out in Long Lake, fishing, mountain boarding, laughing, learning, or just straight up relaxing. If that isn't cool enough, the extensive history that Sabattis has is truly mezmorizing and awe inspiring. 

Earlier this month, a group of scouts and adult leaders submitted a Letter to the Editor to TAPintoSPF urging the Patriots Path Council to keep the camp. According to the letter published on Sept. 10, 

Patriots Path Council Executive Committee is voting in a week to close Sabattis Adventure Camp, which has been a source of learning and fun for Boy Scouts for 60 years, and sell the 1,250-acre property to developers in the Adirondacks.
