BERNARDS TWP., NJ - With spring on the horizon, the Somerset County Park Commission is seeking applicants for seasonal and positions in county parks, such as instructors for nature programs at the Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge, and as gardener positions at the Leonard J. Buck Garden in Far Hills.

Seasonal employees needed for spring, summer and fall

The Park Commission annually hires part-time and seasonal employees to support the staffing needs of the millions of visitors to the county parks system. The spring, summer, and fall seasons require a large number of seasonal employees  to support the staffing needs of the county parks, golf courses, trail systems, and facilities, the park commission said in a release on Monday, March 6.

The Environmental Education Center (EEC) in Basking Ridge is seeking neasonal naturalists for the Summer Science Programs. Responsibilities include implementing nature programs and supervising children. The main focus will be the Eco-Explorers program for ages 7 to 9, and AWESIM KIDS, for ages 10 to 13.

The EEC, located at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge, is also seeking applicants for the summer maintenance crew. 

There is an additional opening at the EEC for a seasonal naturalist/paddlesport instructor who will be responsible for a variety of canoeing and kayaking opportunities that are intended to stimulate awareness and understanding of the environment, build an appreciation of New Jersey waterways, and promote interest in canoeing and kayaking.

Gardening positions

Seasonal gardening positions are available for individuals to assist full-time garden staff with various maintenance tasks including planting, pruning, edging, soil renovation, mulching, weeding, and watering. Seasonal Gardener positions are available at either Leonard J. Buck Garden in Far Hills, or at Colonial Park Gardens in Franklin Township. 

Other positions are open at this time for part-time recreation assistants in the Therapeutic Recreation Department who are responsible for assisting children, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities. Additional Therapeutic Recreation Camp job openings include a sports and games specialist, creative arts specialist, senior counselors, and counselors. 

Season park ranger positions are open as well.

There are also seasonal maintenance openings at Somerset County general use parks and golf courses.  Duties include mowing, trash removal, and turf maintenance. In addition, the Torpey Athletic Field Complex located in in Bridgewater is seeking seasonal maintenance staff to assist in day-to-day field maintenance. Job duties include pre and post-game work; mound/home plate and bullpen maintenance; mowing, edging, and painting foul lines; dragging infields and warning tracks; irrigation and hand watering; and aeration, top dressing and seeding.  

The Somerset County Park Commission said it offers a working environment that motivates employees to provide the citizens of Somerset County with the highest level of personal service. Visitors can enjoy active or passive recreation opportunities in the 15,000-plus acres of county park facilities.
