NUTLEY, NJ - Commissioner Steven L. Rogers, director of Nutley public affairs, has confirmed with TAPinto that he is strongly considering a run for New Jersey state governor for the 2017 race.

“I’m very, very seriously considering running for governor,” Rogers said. “A lot of people have been pushing it around. Its humbling, a lot of people are coming to me,” he continued.

Rogers has an extensive background with the police department and especially in the military.

He achieved the rank of sergeant in the Air Force serving during the Vietnam War era. In 1974 he joined the East Orange police department after he was discharged from the military.  In 1981 Rogers enlisted in the Navy Reserves. From 1976 until July 2011 he was an officer for the Nutley police department, retiring as a detective lieutenant.

Rogers was again called to active duty after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. He was then promoted to lieutenant commander assigned to the U.S. Northern Command for the FBI National Joint Terrorism Task Force in Washington D.C. as a senior naval intelligence officer.

He believes this, along with his role as public affairs commissioner will be an asset when he enters his campaign for governor.

His campaign message will be, “It’s time to put an end to career politicians, who are sitting on a lifetime,” he said.

“People are tired of career politicians, empty promises of lowering taxes, improving the quality of life and what happens, they don’t deliver, taxes go up and quality of life goes down,” he stated.

As commissioner Rogers goes door-to-door to speak to Nutley residents. “I knocked on doors, spoke to people; found out what’s on their minds. How many politicians do that?” he noted.

Rogers claims he will be an outsider in this race. He asserts that he does not know many politicians. “[I have] no connections with anyone in politics,” he said.

“If we do this it will be a tough battle. Republicans are going to have it tough. I’m not going into this thinking it will be easy,” he noted.

Rogers is not your typical politician. “You get what you see,” he explained.

He has been all over New Jersey- north and south, on the campaign for President-elect Donald Trump as well as on Fox news. He also has been promoting his position on politics on Fox news on a regular basis.

Rogers said although he didn’t fill any forms yet this will be a discussion with his wife within the next few days and something he is quite certain she will be on board with and he will pursue. is an online newspaper serving the Township of Nutley. is accredited by the New Jersey Press Association, and is the only locally owned news organization serving the community.
