BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Kingsley, the purebred English Springer Spaniel, is recuperating after surgery that saved his leg. He will be looking for his "forever home" in early 2018.

Kingsley's journey to New Jersey began when Home for Good Dog Rescue wanted to help save his leg. Kingsley was hit by a car that crushed his back leg and specialized surgery was necessary to save it from being amputated.

Home for Good Dog Rescue received a call from the veterinarian in Georgia to see if they could help. The vet told HFGDR, "I don't want to put this dog down, he is a wonderful dog, can you help?"

"We said, 'absolutely'," said Matthew Holowienka of HFGDR.

Originally, amputation seemed likely for Kingsley, however, after connecting with Garden State Veterinary Associates in Tinton Falls, NJ, HFGDR was informed there was hope to save his leg through specialized orthopedic surgery.

Holowienka explained that the veterinarians they use in the southern states could not handle the specialized surgery necessary to save Kingsley's leg, so they transported him to New Jersey.

"If there was a chance to save his leg, we were going to take it, that's why we flew him up," said Holowienka.

Pilot Thomas Callahan made the special trip to South Carolina to transport Kingsley. Callahan flies on his free time and makes several trips for us, said Holowienka. "He helped us out when we were doing the Texas rescue and brought some of the dogs back for us."

Since Callahan was going down, they transported a total of 18 dogs in this flight. "If there are other dogs that can go on board, then let's do it," said Holowienka. Because siblings can travel together, this transport included a few sets of black and yellow lab mix siblings.

When the 18 dogs arrived to Berkeley Heights on a Sunday afternoon, their facility was a buzz with "all hands on deck" eager and happy to help. "We have a great team of volunteers that are always here willing to help," said Holowienka. He said that when a transport comes in they feed the dogs, bath and cut their nails. They also have a vet tech on staff that makes sure their medical records are up to date.

The dogs went to foster homes immediately and are ready for adoption.

For Kingsley, his recovery will take up to 8 weeks and then he will be ready for adoption. He may need additional surgeries due to the injuries being more serious than initially thought. However, HFGDR remain hopeful for his recovery.
