Suspect Arrested In Christmas Double Murder

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Law enforcement arrested a murder suspect, charged regarding a double shooting in Plainfield last December, at a Monmouth Junction apartment complex on Thursday morning, police said.

Isaiah Mayo-Givens, 23, was charged with first degree murder, first degree attempted murder and two weapons offenses in a warrant signed Wednesday regarding a double shooting in Plainfield on Dec. 26, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.

According to a press release from that office, Manuel Berrios, 18, of Plainfield and another unidentified man were both shot on the 600 block of East Third Street in Plainfield at 9:40 p.m. on Dec. 26.

Both men were transported to a local hospital where Berrios succumbed to his wounds, police said.

The victim was a former South Plainfield High School Student who was involved in wrestling, basketball, track, and football.

An investigation by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office’s Homicide Task Force, the Plainfield Police Division, the Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, and the Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit resulted in Mayo-Givens being identified as a suspect in the case, the release said.

State Superior Court Judge Regina Caulfield approved the filing of the criminal charges late on Wednesday.

South Brunswick Police Capt. Jim Ryan said township officers were advised early Thursday that Mayo-Givens was at the Royal Oaks apartment complex on Route 1 in Monmouth Junction around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

“Police went along with (investigators from) the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, to a residence at the Royal Oaks apartment complex following a lead on a murder suspect,” Ryan said. “He was taken into custody without incident.”

Ryan said Mayo-Givens was at the home of his girlfriend.

According to police, Mayo-Givens is jailed at the Union County Jail pending his first court appearance.

Anyone with information about this matter still is being urged to contact Homicide Task Force Sgt. Jose Vendas at 908-358-3048 or Detective Sofia Santos at 908-577-4256.
