WARREN, NJ - The Warren 9U Baseball Team won the Union County Spring Travel league championship Sunday by defeating Green Brook, 9-8, with a last-inning rally.
Warren trailed, 8-5, in the final inning, but the comeback kids never gave up and rallied to score four in the final frame
Gavin Martignetti continued his hot hitting, leading off the inning with a hit and Jonah Segal worked out a walk, then with two runners on John Williams cracked a double scoring both men. He was followed by Ian Youngelson who delivered one of his two RBI of the day.
Once Warren got within one run, the speedy Lash Patel worked out a walk and was advanced to third when Anthony Reale and and Nick Gasparino got on base to load the bases. With the score tied, 8-8, Ryan Getzoff deliverd a bases-loaded hit scoring Patel as the winning run. It was Getzoff's second RBI of the day.
Mike Percario was the starting pitcher and struck out 5 over two innings giving up 1 earned run and had a RBI single.
Getzoff pitched two strong innings followed by Gasparino who got the win in relief holding Greenbrook to one unearned run over the final two innings.
Warren's late inning defense was key to the victory with strong outfield play by Jake Stapelton and Noah Paradise shutting down the opponents efforts at the hot corner.
The Warren team completed league play undefeated with key contributions all year from Joseph Deluca.
Head coach Mike Percario is very proud of the "cardiac kids" from Warren, as they are nick-named due to the exciting ways they keep their fans holding their hearts unitil their late inning heroics.
