SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ - On Thursday, November 13, the Somerset Hills YMCA hosted the 27th Annual Volunteer Recognition Night at the Olde Mill Inn, Basking Ridge. Each year, this community-wide event provides local non-profits with the opportunity to honor volunteers who make significant contributions to their organizations, and to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism and community. The event is coordinated and presented by the Somerset Hills YMCA.
At the event, Jody D’Agostini, Chair of the Somerset Hills YMCA Board of Directors and master of ceremonies for the event, promoted community volunteerism by encouraging event guests to explore VolunteerMatch.org, a website that nonprofits can use to post volunteer opportunities and that volunteers can use to search for opportunities that match their interests. The Y credited volunteer, Ted Vagelos of Warren, for his IT expertise in making a link to the VolunteerMatch website available on the Y’s website so that members can easily connect to local volunteer opportunities. VolunteerMatch.org is open to anyone in the community looking to give back through volunteerism.

“Volunteer Recognition Night is a beautiful event to honor local volunteers. I am always inspired by the passion of the volunteers and the great work being done,” said D’Agostini. “At the Y, we are proud to host an event that celebrates social responsibility, which is core to our mission. After all, volunteers are the heart and soul of our community.”

Local non-profits that participated in the event included: Adult Day Center of the VNA of Somerset Hills, Bernards PEC, Bernardsville Chamber of Commerce, Bonnie Brae, Bryan’s Dream, CASA Shaw, Diva for a Day, Friends of Hearts for Honduras, FOWA Rescue, Heartworks, Ridge PTO, Room to Read, Rotary Club of Bernardsville, SHARE of Africa, Somerset Hills YMCA, Somerset Valley YMCA, and the VNA of Somerset Hills.

Additionally, the Somerset Hills YMCA presented the Millicent Fenwick Memorial Civic Award, which honors an area individual or organization for meritorious leadership and service.  This year’s recipient was the Rotary Club of Bernardsville.

“The Rotary Club of Bernardsville has a long history of service to our community. Their grass roots projects make a meaningful difference in the lives of residents, both young and old. The impact they make as a community service organization is well deserving of the Millicent Fenwick Civic Award,” commented David M. Carcieri, President and CEO.

To recognize volunteerism among employees, the Y also presented its Jack Welch Social Responsibility Champion of the Year Award, which is named in memory of the local businessman and restaurateur who devoted nearly 40 years of volunteer service to the Somerset Hills YMCA, as well as other community organizations. The award honors Y employees who volunteer their time and talents outside the Y to strengthen our community. This year’s recipients were Ginny Caporaso and Margo Eig both of whom work in the Y’s Wellness Program and volunteer their time at the VA Hospital.
