WARREN, NJ- A team of students representing Warren Middle School travelled to Washington, DC for a 3-day Academic Quiz Bowl tournament and came away with the Championship over teams from all across the country. The invitation-only tournament consisted of a grueling set of 9 matches over the course of 3 days during which the Warren students faced high-caliber Academic teams, many of which had won their own state tournaments in order to reach the face-off in Washington, DC. In the final championship match, Warren convincingly defeated a very strong Verity Middle School, the state champion from Kentucky, by a score of 415-275.
The team was led by Warren Middle School teacher Susan Cooper whose dedication to the Academic Team has led to many local and regional tournament victories, and now, for the first time, a national title. The team was captained by Jarett Schwartz. Team member Neelay Trivedi earned tournament MVP honors for his outstanding play. This is the first time a New Jersey based middle school has won this prestigious national tournament. Two New Jersey high schools have won this tournament in the past, once in 1994 (East Brunswick H.S.) and also in 2012 (High Tech H.S. in Lincroft).
