WARREN, NJ -  One of the girls’ bathrooms at Warren Middle School has a new look aimed at reinforcing positive messages to empower girls during the critical pre-teen years.

Female students visiting the main lobby bathroom were greeted by such colorful tidings as “YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD,” “WE RISE BY LIFTING OTHERS,” and “EVERY FLOWER BLOOMS IN ITS OWN TIME,”on Monday, Jan. 22.

“There is no more fragile time for self esteem than when you are a middle school girl and no harder place than in the girl’s bathroom,” says Curriculum Supervisor Stacey Modugno who, with a team of others, stayed after school on Friday to decorate the bathroom.

The team of self-dubbed “bathroom fairies” with Modugno were art teachers Meryl Lettire and Jennifer Ronkiewicz, guidance counselors Lauren Regal and Helen Scully and 7th grade language arts teacher Myranda Shimko who came up with the original idea.

“A recent article in the online publication “A Mighty Girl” gave me the idea to redesign the place where middle school girls can feel the most vulnerable or alone,” says Shimko. “I love that I work with a team of go-getters, artists, and collaborators who could take this idea from seed to blossom.”

Maintenance worker Calvin James prepared the bathroom for its makeover while dean of students Max Achtau facilitated the project.

“We hope our female students enjoy the new look and positive vibes,” Achtau says.

“Many of the girls were talking about it as they came down the hallway,” adds 6th grade language arts teacher Brenda Sasso.

The team of so-called bathroom fairies used paint, chalk, ink and other media to create a colorful and meaningful display of positive energy.

“This project, devised and implemented by our dedicated staff members, exemplifies the district motto of shining brighter every day,” says superintendent Matthew Mingle. “The supportive messages reflect a team of passionate educators who work day in and day out to provide an emotionally safe and supportive learning environment for our students.”
