WARREN, NJ - Seventh graders at Warren Middle School combined research, oral presentations and a circle discussion to complete a comprehensive social studies project that linked current happenings to historical events.

Students in Bonnie Pierson’s social studies classes created a list of historical themes studied thus far and identified current issues with the same themes before choosing a current event about which they wished to learn more.

The project culminated in each student team presenting an issue on a single slide, followed by whole class discussion on Feb 1-3. To encourage participation, the 7th graders were given green post-it notes and asked to use at least one in each day’s discussion.

"The overall idea for the project was to identify ways that history repeats and to discuss whether people learn from mistakes of the past or repeat them in some way," says Pierson
