WARREN, NJ - Students from all four Warren Township elementary schools, Mount Horeb School, Woodland School, Angelo L. Tomaso School and Central School, put their passion for reading to the test on Wednesday, May 30, during the annual Battle of the Books competition held at Mount Horeb School.
After 12 rounds of very specific questions pertaining to each of the books on the selected reading list, the “Reading Rock Stars” team from Angelo L. Tomaso School came in first place, answering the most questions correctly, including knowing the author’s name for each book.
All grade five students from each elementary school have been preparing since November by reading or listening to as many as 15 books from a selected reading list.
“Shoeless Joe & Me: A Baseball Card Adventure” by Dan Gutman, “The Familiars” by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson, “The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963” by Christopher Paul Curtis and “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis are among the list of books selected for the grade five students.
The library was filled with spectators who came to witness this exciting, district-wide competition.
Each team of students displayed their very best effort during this impressive showcase of reading comprehension. Teammates worked collaboratively to come up with the best response for each question.
The team captains of each of the four teams answered all of the questions in a clear and confident manner and all participants were enjoying the experience.
The school district thanks the Library Media Specialist from each elementary school – Christine Burkhardt, Susan Jackson, Kate Zaleski and Lindsay Le Neve – for a job well done coordinating the entire event.
