WARREN, NJ - The Warren Youth Basketball Association (WYBA) has announced a pilot program in order to increase participation and help strengthen Warren’s travel program for girls. The pilot program will be limited to the 4th grade girls travel team. Prospective players from the sending districts of Long Hill, Watchung, and Green Brook are invited to try out for the 4th grade team. Warren travel teams participate in the Jersey Basketball Association League. Players from more than one town may play on a town team as long as all players reside in a sending district.
In some past years, Warren has been unable to form girls’ travel teams at certain grade levels due to an insufficient number of players trying out. Fewer players are participating due to a variety of reasons, including decreased school enrollment and competition from other sports and activities.
Watchung, Green Brook, and Long Hill, have experienced the same challenge. “This should give more girls the opportunity to play travel,” according to Greg Riley, Director of Girls Travel for the WYBA.
Girls from Watchung and Green Brook, which have frequently been unable to form girls teams, now have a shot to try out and play. At the same time, the WYBA will be able to boost registration and hopefully give Warren girls the chance to develop and compete at the travel level, not to mention the possibility of their forging new friendships with teammates from other towns.
Down the road, most of the girls will attend Watchung Hills and could wind up playing together on its varsity squad. “Pardon the sports vernacular, but I believe it’s a win for everybody,” says Riley. This year, the pilot program is limited to 4th grade girls travel. However, any out of town player who played on a WYBA girls travel team in past years in order to fill an open roster spot is grand-fathered and invited to try out again this year.
All players, boys or girls, who wish to try out for travel must register on the WYBA website at www.warrenyouthbasketball.org. The registration deadline is September 30, 2018. Travel try outs will take place the week of October 1.
