CHARLESTON, SC - Daniel Edelman of Warren is among eighteen boys soccer players selected to the id² National Selection team roster as part of the 2017 id² National Selection International Tour to Spain.  Cameron Dunbar (Albion SC) and Warren Middle School eighth grader, Edelman (PDA) return from the 2016 id² National Selection International Tour where they played against top academy teams of Valencia CF, Villarreal CF, RCD Espanyol and FC Barcelona.

"This opportunity for me to travel to Spain again is absolutely incredible, said Edelman. "It’s my dream to become a professional soccer player and this trip will only get me closer to be successful. I am looking forward to this experience not because I get to go to Spain and see the culture, but mainly because the competition my team and I are going to encounter will be world class.”

Seventeen clubs spanning nine states and Peru are represented and the 2017 id² National Selection International Tour will be a multi-faceted experience highlighted by participation in the 17th annual Mediterranean International Cup (MIC). The trip is made possible through strong support from Nike and assistance from LaLiga and Premier International Tours.

The trip signifies the conclusion of the id² age group cycle targeting 2003 boys. Players were selected from id² Training Camps and Player Development Program (PDP) events.

"We are excited to participate in a competitive tournament for the first time with our international tour," said Gerry McKeown, id² director and head coach of the id² National Selection team. "While it will not change our approach to the games and committing to excellence over results, it will guarantee challenging matches against players from our own age group.

"In the past, we have been disappointed when our opponents would use players from older age groups to influence the outcome of the matches. It should be a great opportunity for young players to compete against some of the world's elite in a tournament that has such a storied history of talented participants."

Numerous id² National Selection alumni have been called into U.S. Soccer's National Team programs, including Christian Pulisic, DeAndre Yedlin and Greg Garza.

The MIC takes place on the northeast coast of Spain at the Costa Brava, featuring the best clubs and national academy teams in the world. In its 16-year history, top teams like Brazil National Selection, Mexico National Selection, Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool FC and FC Inter Milan have all competed. Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., Gerard Piqué and other world renowned stars have taken the MIC pitch.

The tournament officially begins April 12 and progresses five days with the championship round on Easter Sunday (April 16). Prior to that, the id² National Selection team will begin its journey in New Jersey with a domestic camp, April 6-8. After arriving in Barcelona the morning of April 9, the American delegation will transfer to Girona for training sessions over the following two days. Finally, on April 11, the group moves on to Playa D’Aro for the MIC competition.

ABOUT THE TOUR:

US Club Soccer's id² Program previously toured Spain in 2012, 2013 and 2016, playing games against the likes of Atlético Madrid, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. In the eight-year history of the international tour, US Club Soccer's id² National Selection team has played a collection of friendlies against top academy teams. Participation in the 2017 MIC represents the first time the id² team will play in a tournament.

In addition to competing in one of the best competitions in the world, the group will be immersed in a multi-faceted experience on- and-off-the-field that also includes watching professional games, training in some of the country's best facilities and enjoying cultural immersion through sightseeing excursions.

U.S. Soccer will send a technical advisor to accompany the group on the tour in order to scout players for potential inclusion in youth national team programming. Numerous id² National Selection alumni have been called into U.S. Soccer's National Team programs, including Christian Pulisic, DeAndre Yedlin and Greg Garza.

As has been the case in past international trips, video journals will be made available from Spain. Video journals from past trips are available here: 2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011 | 2010.

Help Save Sabattis Adventure Camp for Our Boy Scouts

Dear Editor:

All of the other troops think that Blackfoot is the worst campsite at Sabattis Adventure Camp. That’s because it’s the furthest walk to the center of camp. Troop 77 knows that Blackfoot is the best campsite at Sabattis. We’ve been camping at that campsite every summer for years, far longer than our current scouts or their older brothers can remember.

Remembering 9/11: a Warren resident remembers

Sixteen years. The day that changed my life and our country.

Last year my son asked me what I remembered about that day for an assignment he was doing for social studies.
