WARREN, NJ – Watchung Hills High School basketball teams went up against Immaculata on Thursday. The boys traveled to Somerville where they lost, 63-49. The girls hosted the Spartans and hung on to win a nail biter, 44-40.
After outscoring the Spartans 15-3 in the first quarter, Immaculata outscored Watchung Hills 15-5 in the second quarter, and the Warrior lead at the half was cut to 20-18.
With less than 30 seconds remaining, Julia Cunningham went to the free throw line and sunk both shots to put her team up 41-38.
Following a basket by Immaculata’s Kaitlyn Roberto, to make the score 41-40, Cunningham was fouled with 15.2 seconds to go and went back to the line.
Cunningham knocked down both free throws to put the Warriors up 43-40. Watchung Hills added one more free-throw with 5.2 seconds left to seal the win.
Cunningham and Maddy Kirchofer led the Warriors in scoring, sinking 11 points each. Kristen Reilly led the Spartans, leading the team with 12 points.
The Lady Warriors record is 8-2 and they will travel to Warren Hills on Saturday.
In Somerville, Watchung Hills took an early lead but Immaculata, outscored The Warriors 12-5, to take a 44-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
Watchung Hills never caught up and the Spartans ended it with a 63-49 victory. Anthony Rocchietti was the high scorer for Watchung Hills with 13 points. The Warriors record is 7- 5. They will face North Plainfield at home on Saturday.
