WARREN, NJ - The Watchung Hills Gold Flag Football team took on the Dukes of Hillsborough and the Crusaders of Clark in Sunday action.
The Wolverines offense had a tough time moving the ball against both defenses, but managed to come out on top. Against the Dukes, the Wolverines offense was led by Brayden Kelly who had two scoring runs of 40 and 15 yards. The final touchdown was scored late in the game by K.J. West, who plunged into the end zone from 5 yards out. That score was set up by a 15-yard run by Jadon Prinzivalli.
In the game against the Crusaders, the Wolverines offense reached the end zone two times. Colin Kolakowski got them on the board when he scampered 25 yards for the score. Bryon McCann capped off the scoring with a 5-yard scoring run.
The defense continued to dominate as they only allowed two scores on the day, both coming on the last play. In the Hillsborough game, Perry Weingarten led the defense with six flags. He was helped by Mason Kelly, Colin Kolakowski and K.J. West who each grabbed five flags. Brayden Kelly pulled four flags while Jadon Prinzivalli, Kevin Butler, Jack Martin, Gerald Tobia and Byron McCann got in on the action recording one flag each. In the Clark game, Michael DiNardi and K.J. West led the defense with three flags each. Mason Kelly and Colin Kolakowski each pulled two flags while Kevin Butler and Perry Weingarten recorded one flag each.
The Blue Flag team played two tough games against the Crusaders and one against the Dukes. The offense struggled to get anything going against a tough Crusaders defense, but they got on the board when quarterback Aidan Grochowski connected with Jayden Fernandez for a 30-yard touchdown reception. Cameron Kolakowski, Lucas Garcia and Justin Alicea each added 20 yards rushing to the offensive total. In the game against the Dukes, Joseph Bateh scrambled for a 20-yard gain before Jackson Acosta raced 15 yards for the Wolverines only score. Kyle Ling and Nicolas Betancourth were credited with key blocks on those two runs.
The defense held tough and only allowed four scores on the day. Jackson Acosta led the defense with a total of five flags. Lucas Garcia and Cameron Kolakowski each pulled four flags and Jayden Fernandez grabbed three. Joseph Bateh, Aidan Grochowski and Maximus Yaeger each pulled two flags while Justin Alicea and Stevie Prisco pulled one.
The Wolverines Junior Flag team played two hard fought battles against the Crusaders and Dukes. In the game against the Crusaders, Niko West found a hole up the middle and picked up a 20-yard gain. That run set up the first touchdown by Ainsley Kelly who scampered 5 yards to the end zone. The final touchdown of the game was scored by Austin Kolakowski who exploded down the sideline for a 40-yard score. In the Dukes game, Liam Morris got the ball down to the five yard line on a nice 30-yard run. Nicholas Valenti then ran it in for the touchdown. Liam Morris scored the second touchdown when he sprinted 40 yards on an end around. The final touchdown was also scored by Liam Morris from five yards out after Ainsley Kelly picked up a 20-yard gain. Martice Bennett, Brendan Archbold, Miles Acosta and Gideon Minieri made big blocks to set up the touchdowns.
The Wolverines defense won hard fought battles against both the Crusaders and Dukes. In the Crusaders game, Aarish Patel and Nicholas Valenti led the charge with three flags each. Austin Kolakowski pulled two flags while Liam Morris, Niko West and Vincent Glynos each grabbed one. The defense held the Crusaders to only one score on the day. In the Dukes game, Liam Morris led the defense with three flags while Nicholas Valenti pulled two. Niko West, Austin Kolakowski and Ainsley Kelly finished the game with one flag each. The Dukes managed to reach the end zone three times which ended the game in a tie.
