WARREN, NJ - The Watchung Hills Jr. Midget Wolverines battled the Maplewood South Orange Packers in their first round playoff game and came away with a 28-0 victory.
The team executed well on both sides of the ball. The defense let up one first down in the opening drive and then stuffed the Packers on fourth and short. Chance Modica and Chase Jones ran the ball well and the Wolverines marched 61 yards down the field for their first score on a nice cut up the left side by Devon Bennet.
The Wolverines recovered the kickoff and Tom Schelling ran the ball 16 yards for the touchdown on the very next play. Chris Clintock split the uprights to put the Wolverines up 14-0. The defense was tough again stuffing the Packer offense in four downs. Bennet broke through the left side behind Matt Cardoza, Matt Roth, and Connor James to score his second TD and Clintock made the kick.
Gary Gaglioti and Cardoza applied great pressure on the QB in the next series, causing an errant throw which Ryan Pedrani intercepted and returned 47 yards for the last TD of the day. Roth and Jonathan Taub delivered big hits all day from their linebacker positions and Clintock was in the Packer QB's face all game recording two sacks.
Highlights from the second half included six carries and 42 yards for Ryan Trimble and four carries for 23 yards for Tyler James. The Wolverines take on the Flemington Falcons in the championship game on Sunday in Somerville.
