KENILWORTH, NJ – Katherine Ge, a junior at New Providence High School, won the overall prize at today’s Congressional Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery,” hosted by Congressman Leonard Lance, representative for New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District.

As the winner of the contest, Ge’s acrylic painting, “Abandoned House,” will be sent to Washington. D.C. to be showcased in the annual Nationwide Congressional High School Art Exhibition.

“In the tunnel between the Cannon House Office Building and the Capitol, the works of art from across the nation are displayed and that will be true of one of the fine works of art here,” Lance said. “It is one of the most popular exhibits in the capitol because it’s the art of young people from the entire country.”

Lance, who is the Republican chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus and the Congressional Humanities Caucus, mentioned that the national artwork tends to display regional differences by portraying different landscapes. Ge’s work, “Abandoned House,” was inspired by a hike she took through the Watchung Reservation.

“The idea behind it was an intricate, cool building my friends and I came across while hiking,” Ge said. “It was just really interesting to explore New Jersey.”

Along with Ge, three other students were awarded. Yenteen Hu from Westfield High School won the “Viewer’s Choice” award, chosen by Merck employees who viewed the artwork display in their building during the last few weeks. Third place was awarded to Austin Westfield of the Delbarton School, and second place went to Katherine Tai of Millburn High School.

“We have wonderful high schools in New Jersey,” Lance said. “This great art is emblematic of the wonderful schools that our participants attend. We thank all of those schools for what they do.”

The event was hosted by Merck at its Kenilworth campus. The competition was started in 1982 as a way for Congress to encourage recognize student's artistic talent. All students enrolled in ninth grade through twelfth grade from the seventh congressional district were invited to enter. The schools represented by student artwork are listed below:

Bridgewater-Raritan Regional High School, Cranford Senior High School, The Delbarton School, Gemma Art Foundation, Governor Livingston High School, Hillsborough High School, Hunterdon Central Regional High School, Lawrenceville School, Millburn High School, Montgomery High School, Mount Olive High School, New Jersey Art Academy, New Providence High School, Ridge High School, Stanford Online High School, Union County Vocational-Technical High School, Watchung Hills Regional High School, Voorhees High School and Westfield High School.
