ANNANDALE, NJ - Revenge is sweet for the Warriors. Mike Recenello went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Matt Alarcon went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Watchung Hills baseball team over North Hunterdon in the first round of the North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 tournament on Monday, 8-6.
Earlier in the season, the Warriors lost to North Hunterdon, 12-4 on April 4.
Jeff Poggi added two doubles and an RBI for the Warriors.
Mike Murray pitched a full five innings allowing four runs on six hits, striking out five to improve to 5-2 on the year and Kevin Badger got the 6-out save, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out four for Watchung Hills.
“Great to see us finally play our game,” said WHRHS head coach Joe Tremarco. “We’ve been in a bit of a rut the past five games but that’s what’s great about this game...you never know when you’re gonna snap out of it. Not many gave us a shot, but the guys in our locker room know our potential and if we play clean, we can compete with anyone. Murray gave us the effort we needed on the mound and Poggi, Recenello, Alarcon, Riley, and McKenna supplied the offense. Martins with some great defensive plays that got us out of some jams and Badger with the six out save was great. One of those games you knew it was gonna come down to the end, and our guy on the mound was a little bit better than their guy today.”
Watchung Hills improves to 11-13 and will face second-seeded Millburn in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Millburn escaped Bridgewater on Monday, 6-5.
