WARREN, NJ - The Watchung Hills Boys fencing team defeated Bergen Tech on Tuesday to advance into the "Sweet 16" fencing season playoffs.
At the end of the first round of fencing, Watchung Hills was leading Bergen Tech 6 to 3, with the epee squad sweeping Bergen tech in the first round. The second round of fencing did not go as well for Watchung Hills and left them in a dead heat with Bergen Tech with 9 wins each. The final round of fencing was neck and neck between the teams, with two wins in saber for Bergen Tech and two wins in foil for Watchung Hills.
The teams entered the final three bouts of epee fencers with a tied score of 12 wins each. The Watchung Hills epee squad made up of Ian Blakeslee, Daniel Shell and Kyle Rokosny swept the Bergen Tech squad and clinched the meet at 14 to 12 with a final score of 15 to 12.
Both Ian Blakeslee and Dominic Heise were undefeated at the meet. Other notable performances were Darren Lei in saber going 2 and 1 and both Kyle Rokosny and Daniel Shell each going 2 and 1 in epee. The Watchung Hills boys team will fence Ridge High School on Thursday as the first round of the Sweet Sixteen playoffs begin.
The Watchung Hills girls team, which won it's district championship, will fence on Friday, February 5 at home, in their quest to win the State Championship
