WARREN, NJ - The Watchung Hills Boys and Girls fencing teams took different routes but came out victorious against Ridge, Pingry and North Hunterdon this past week.
The Boys team won a close one against Bernards 15-12 with a dominant effort from the foil squad. Captain, Dominic Heise lead the way with three victories, Henry Engel added two victories and Zach Velling added one victory. The sabre squad also had a very successful day with six wins with Allen Zu, Troy Cullen, and Michael Vala each bringing home two wins. In epee, Daniel Shell, Michael Rahman and Ethan Jardim won a bout each.
The Girls team continued to roll with a 16-11 victory over Bernards. The sabre team impressed with six victories with Jenna Leski, Jacqueline Lee and Amanda Soliman going 2-0. The epee team added five victories with Maya Zhang going 2-0 and Katelyn Bereheiko, Julia Liaw and Sophia Su adding one victory apiece. The girls foil team added six more victories with Captain Brooke Stanicki going 2-0 and Rachel Lee, Elizabeth Bruno and Alan Margulies each adding one victory.
The Pingry meet was a nail bitter for the boys team. With the team score 12-13, Boys “A” Epee, Daniel Shell tied his bout with seconds left and then went on to win it in overtime to tie the overall match 13-13. With the match all square, Kyle Rokosny scored a victory to propel the team to a comeback 14-13 victory to the delight of the standing room crowd. Henry Engle and Zack Velling continued to impress with two victories at foil and Logan Mcnulty added one victory for the squad. Alan Zu and Michael Burdge each had a victory for the Sabre team.
The girls team had an easier time with Pingry winning 16-11. The Foil and Epee teams went 6-3 and the Sabre squad added four more victories in the win.
In the North Hunterdon meet, the boys won 17-10 with Alan Zu and Michael Vala going a perfect 3-0 at Sabre and Troy Cullen adding two victories for the squad. Dominic Heise and Zach Velling added two victories in foil as did Daniel Shell at Epee. Philip Ding, Kavin Elamurugan and Michael Rahman each added a victory. The boys team is now 6-2 for the year.
The girls team rolled over North Hunterdon 18-9 with the sabre team of Jenna Leski, Amanda Soliman, Jacqueline Lee and Cherlin Zu adding seven wins for the squad and Brooke Stanicki, Marta Savchuk and Rachael Lee adding six victories for the foil squad. Katelyn had an impressive day going 3-0 at eppe with Amurutha Ajjarapu and Julia Locasion each adding one victory. With the win the Girls team pushed its record to 7-1 on the year heading into Thursday’s meet with West Windsor Plainsboro South.
