BERNARDSVILLE, NJ - This past weekend the Watchung Hills Boys and Girls fencing teams competed in the 2nd annual Somerset County Interscholastic Athletic Association Fencing Championships at Bernards High School.  

The Boys Epee squad came in third place in the pool round with Daniel Shell advancing to the individual round.  Kyle Rokosny went 3-1 in pools.  The Boys Sabre squad performed well in the stacked boys Sabre division.  Michael Vala went 5-1 but missed advancing to the individual round by just one indicator. The Boys Foil squad was missing their “A” strip fencer, Dominic Heise but gained valuable experience heading into our first dual meet next week.  Zack Velling, Henry Engel and Logan McNulty showed great promise and performed very well.

The Girls Team had an outstanding day placing 3rdoverall in the team portion of the tournament.  The girls Foil squad led the way with a 2nd place finish with Rachel Lee and Marta Savchuk going 5-1 in the pool round.  The girl’s Epee team placed 3rd with Maya Zhang going 5-1 in pools and Julie Liaw registering a strong performance on the Epee A strip.  The Sabre team finished 4th with Jacqueline Lee going 5-1. 

Girls captain Brooke Stanicki went 6-1 in the individual competition and took home a second place medal in the individual Foil competition.
