SOMERSET, NJ - Sophomore Keona Schenck led the way for Franklin with 25 points and Diamond Miller added 24 points as the Franklin Warriors topped the Watchung Hills Warriors on Tuesday to advance to Saturday’s Somerset County Tournament final, 75-40.
“Tough night offensively for us,” said WHRHS head coach Reese Kirchofer. “Lots of opportunities but not enough conversions. Franklin not surprisingly had a lot of weapons and found ways knock down their chances. That’s why they are the defending Tourament of Champions winners. We as a team need to regroup for the state tournament. We have done it before. That will be the challenge we face over the next week.”
Senior Julia Cunningham had 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, sophomore Alexa Santo added nine points and sophomore Mahogany Jenkins added five points and pulled down nine rebounds for Watchung Hills.
“We are proud of our Lady Warriors for making it to the semifinals of the county tournament,” said WHRHS Director of Athletics Chris Van Vliet. “Our coaching staff and girls gave it everything they had. They have had a terrific season and we wish them the best in the state tournament next week.”
The Franklin Warriors face top-seeded Rutgers Prep at 1 p.m. Saturday at Franklin High School. Rutgers Prep, which has won the last three SCT championships, beat Bridgewater-Raritan in the other semifinal, 50-35.
Watchung Hills is now 20-3 on the season and next plays Ewing at home on Friday at 4 p.m. (cancelled) and will face Columbia at home in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday.
