ANNANDALE, NJ - Robin McCabe allowed just four hits on the mound for Watchung Hills and the score was tied at zero until the bottom of the seventh inning in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 Softball final on Tuesday.
With a runner on second and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Julia Apsel smacked a hit into right field allowing Amanda Brogan to score for North Hunterdon ending the Warriors season.
“Really tough one today, not only because it brings our season to an end but because it wraps up the careers of some of the most talented and successful players in our program’s history,” said WHRHS assistant coach Jeff Dealaman. “This senior class was part of a conference championship, two county championships, and of course our state championship two years ago. The pitcher-catcher combination of Robin and Genna was a constant for four years and they had a chemistry that was really special. Izzy and Erin were both hugely important pieces of this team for the past three years as well. They had countless big hits and moments in their high school careers. We also appreciate Allie Hurley and Sarah Zullo who both stepped up and made some nice contributions in their senior year.
As for today’s game, we just couldn’t get the big hit despite having our share of opportunities. When you go up against a top pitcher like Maggie Swan it’s important to cash in and score runs when you have a chance with runners in scoring position. They’re a top team and when you let a team like that hang around, they can steal a game from you and that’s what happened today. Robin was awesome today and pitched well enough to earn a win, our bats just couldn’t get any runs across for her. North Hunterdon is a great team and we wish them luck as they continue their run in the state tournament.”
North Hunterdon will face Mt. Olive in the Group 4 Final. My. Olive defeated Livingston in 10 Innings on Thursday to win North Jersey Section 1 Group 4.
