WARREN, NJ - Some 302 students studying one of 6 World Languages at Watchung Hills Regional High School were inducted into those languages’ academic honor societies at a ceremony on Wednesday, April 19, in the school’s Performing Arts Center (PAC).

According to World Languages Supervisor Brad Commerford, the numbers of students honored this year for superior academic excellence of the six languages are: 162 in Spanish, 52 in Italian; 52 in French; and 34 in Chinese. In two languages, Latin and German, enrollment has dwindled and the programs are being phased out.

“Several students pursued study through online courses and qualified for the honor societies,” said Principal George Alexis.“With a focus on preparing students for a fast-changing global economy, we remain committed to strengthening our programs in Chinese, French, Spanish and Italian.”

This year’s inductee in the German Honor Society is Joshua Schmidt. This year’s inductees in the Latin Honor Society isVerma Amreeta and Foram Vaidya.

One student, junior Vincent Pasquale Tartaro, qualified for induction into two language honor societies, in Spanish and Italian.

The induction ceremony was attended by the students, their family members and guests. The guest speaker for the ceremony was Amanda Seewald, board member of the Northeast Conference of the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NCTFL) and the Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey (FLENJ). Seewald, who is a speaker of Spanish, French and Japanese, is the author and director of Maracas Spanish Program for Young Learners, Commerford said. Maracas began as grant-funded pilot program developed, written and taught by Seewald.

In congratulating the students for their academic achievement in World Languages, Seewald encouraged them to continue learning and mastering languages.

More and more, employers are looking for students who have multi-lingual skills and who are “globally engaged.” She said there is a need for global engagement, global learning, and people who are global citizens, who are able to communicate – to be thought provokers, barrier breakers – in multiple languages.

WHRHS teachers from each language read the names of the inducted students, who all stood to be acknowledged and receive the applause of the audience. One student from each language read aloud the induction oath for each society in that society’s language. The students gave their acceptance, “I accept,” in each of the six languages. The oaths and the acceptances were projected on an overhead screen on PAC stage, written in the six languages.

Students reading the oath were: Spanish, Karthik Irakam; Italian, Pasqualina Rivetti; French, Kira Leinwand; Chinese, Emily Yan; Latin, Amreeta Verma and Foram Vaidya; and German, Joshua Schmidt.
