PLAINFIELD, NJ – The highly anticipated USATF Jr. Olympics T&F State Championship meet brought the best of the best of New Jersey to Hub Stine Stadium in Plainfield for a two day event, Saturday June 9 and Sunday June 10, 2018. Top-three earn medals and top-six competitors in each event advance to the USATF Region 2 Junior Olympic Championships on July 12-15 at the College of New Jersey, Ewing, NJ.

Forty-three Berkeley Heights PAL (WolfPack Track Club) members competed and nineteen advanced to Regionals. “Sixty-eight personal best were achieved, which is the most gratifying gift of all, and highly emphasized by the coaching staff. This could not have happened without the dedication, commitment and hard work by our team member”, said Coach Steve SanAntonio.

“Our focus as a team is development, build their aerobic system and strengthen their confidence to hopefully want to compete in High School Track & Field and Cross Country. Working on personal best and not putting the stress on winning is a good recipe for longevity in the sport”, said Coach SanAntonio.

The Boys 8 and under age group 1500 meter, Christopher Yue was a surprise winner with a time of 5:30.71 as he took charge from the gun and never looked back with a big personal best by 16 seconds, and setting a New Jersey USATF State record. He followed that with a 2nd place in the 800 meter event with another personal best 2:50.97.

In the Girls 8 and under age group 1500 meter, Rebecca Frank was also a surprise winner with a time of 6:06.96 and 6th place in the 800 meter event in 3:10.84.

In the Boys 9-10 age group 1500 meter, Nick Frank placed 5th with a time of 5:15.64 (personal best). This was a blazing fast age group with 26 runners running lifetime best.

In the Boys 9-10 age group High Jump, Cam SanAntonio jumped 1.05 and placed 6th out of eleven jumpers. This is a new event for Cam as he had just experimented the week before finding a new liking in the jumping events.

Qualifying for one event is a challenge, but these two WolfPack’s advanced in three events. Sarah Djibatche in the Girls 11-12 age group took 6th in the 800 meter 2:40.77, 5th in 1500 meter 5:20.6 (personal best) and 4th in 3000 meter 11:27.93 (personal best). Sarah is one to remember as she is just getting warned up and more to come from this special talent. Tommy Hunt was the other WolfPack trifecta garnering spots in the Boys 11-12 age group, 4th in the 800 meter 2:27.74 (personal best), 3rd in 1500 meter 4:51.30 and 2nd in 3000 meter 10:22.71 (personal best). Tommy went out ultra conservative in the 3000 meter event and let Max Huang have a ten second gap ahead of him. At the bell lap, Tommy unleashed his ferocious speed and closed in within half a second of first place, a 69 seconds final lap. Tommy learned a valuable lessons from this race, stay with the leaders to gain the best chance at victory.

In the Girls 11-12 age group Danya Spoor was brilliant in two very tactical races. Her competitive spirit, strength and speed helped her score top spots in the 800 meter, 3rd in 2:37 and 2nd in the 1500 meter 5:14.10, a huge personal best by 14 seconds.

The Girls 13-14 age group High Jump, Elsa Spoor cleared height 1.60 and repeats as state champion with a first place spot. Last year she was 1st at the USATF Regional and 2nd best in the USATF Nationals in this event. Elsa took 2nd place in the highly competitive Girls 13-14 age group 800 meter event with a big personal best of 2:26.71 by 6 seconds.

The Boys 13-14 age group 1500 meter, Christopher Marinko put up a strong showing with a 4th place finish in 4:49.92 and also 3rd in the 3000 meter 10:14.98 (personal best). Chris is rounding out his final year with WolfPack before he heads to high school in September.
