Brite Nites 2019

Returning for an 8th year, Wagner Farm Arboretum's spectacular Halloween-themed event "Brite Nites" showcases an elaborate display of intricately and creatively hand-carved and lighted pumpkins. These breathtaking pumpkin sculptures have been updated with new themes, LED bulbs, and new special effects. Your outdoor journey will take you through a multitude of amazing scenes that our artists have created using pumpkins and lights. After meandering along the garden path, take a detour towards the updated "Barn of Fear"... but watch out for the zombies along the way. Try not to scream too loud as you get spooked in the barn. Don't worry if a haunted house is not your thing, because, new this year is a L'il Pumpkin Patch where your little tot can pick a l'il pumpkin and play a game. If you start to get hungry, then you know it's time to stop by the Food Pavilion where a rotating selection of Food Trucks will be selling hot meals. Sit in the Pavilion and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa or cider, also available for purchase. Don't forget to visit the "Store" where locally hand-crafted soaps, honey, candles, wooden toys and baked goods will tempt the senses. A fun night will be guaranteed by all.

The Glass You Choose Could Make That Wine Taste so Fine

October 9, 2019

The wine was very fine, but it was the glasses from which patrons sipped that were the main show at Ventanas in Fort Lee recently.

About 100 diners swirled, sniffed and sipped wines for about an hour while learning which wine glasses are best for what varieties and why.

“The rim diameter actually focuses the flow of the wine on your palate,” said Julio Ruix, regional sales ...

Home Baking for a Profit is Illegal in NJ. Lawsuit Looks to Change That

Not-so-fun fact: New Jersey is the only state where you can’t have a home-baked foods business.

Sales of home-baked goods are allowed in the Garden State, provided they’re at charity events or bake sales. But bakers who filed a lawsuit say there should also be a law that allows them to make a viable living baking from home.

The lawsuit, which remains in New Jersey Superior Court ...

October 12, 2019

I decided to run this year as an Independent after the encouragement from many residents and my desire to make a difference.    I believe our residents want someone who is transparent, independent and can bring fresh ideas, and not someone who has been handpicked by an insular governing body.  I believe, at the local level, it should not be about party or patronage, but rather ...

When Your Number's Up

I have never been waterboarded, but I can’t imagine it can be much worse than going to the DMV.

This is what I was thinking as I was standing in line on the sidewalk at 11:00 in the morning.

There was a line outside the DMV because there was no room inside the DMV. The inside was filled with disgruntled motorists sitting in chairs holding tickets with numbers on them. Numbers like D5 ...

Wanderlust

There are lots of places I would like to visit before I die.

Mars is not one of them.

For starters, it would take something like nine months just to get there. I don’t have that much vacation time.

And even if the travel could be whittled away by technologies yet to be invented to something approaching a flight to, say, Siberia, there is still the problem of leg room. Although I ...
