WATCHUNG, NJ - The Watchung Special Education Parent Advisory Group (SEPAG) is holding a shoe drive fundraiser beginning Aug. 1 through Nov. 1 to raise money to offset cost for programs and services for students of all needs. “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”
The Watchung SEPAG will earn funds based on the total quantity of pairs of gently worn, used and new sneakers and shoes collected. GotSneakers, a social enterprise, will issue funds in compensation for the collected sneakers. Those funds will benefit programs and services for parents and students of all needs. Anyone can help by simply donating gently worn, used and new sneakers and shoes at the Watchung Borough Hall in the rear of Council Chambers from 8am-4pm beginning in Aug. 1, and Bayberry Elementary School and Valley View Middle School beginning Sept. 5.
"We are excited about our sneaker drive," said Kelly Newsome, SEPAG President. Newsome made an impassioned plea for shoes at the last meeting of the Watchung Board of Education.
GotSneakers is a unique fundraising initiative that asks communities to reach into their closets, not their pockets! All donated sneakers are redistributed throughout the GotSneakers’ network of small business partners throughout Haiti, Nicaragua, Bolivia, and Ukraine. GotSneakersworks with micro-entrepreneurs helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Learn more about GotSneakers by visiting their website at www.gotsneakers.com.
"We know that most people have extra sneakers in their closets they would like to donate rather than throw away,” Newsome said. “By doing so, we raise money for students, help the environment, and have the chance to help individuals and families in developing countries who are in desperate need of economic opportunities. It's a win-win for everyone!”
By donating gently worn, used and new sneakers to the Watchung SEPAG the sneakers will make a difference in people’s lives around the world and here at home. Other types of shoes are also being collected.
