WEST GROVE, Pa. — Rebecca Cord of West Grove, Pa., will not only represent the USA as an athlete at the 2019 European Maccabi Games, she’ll be coaching the team as well.

The Maccabi Games bring together Jewish athletes from around the world for competition as well as to celebrate Jewish unity, culture and heritage, while gaining valuable team competition experience.

Among the numerous sports are the equestrian disciplines of dressage and show jumping.

Cord grew up in Indiana, and started riding at age 12. A few years later, at age 18 she moved to Pennsylvania to be a working student at a dressage barn and quickly turned her passion for horses into her profession.

Cord currently operates her training business out of Clarksboro, N.J. but lives just across the river in West Grove, Pa. She is an FEI Rider/Trainer, USDF Certified Instructor, a "L" Program Graduate, and a USDF Bronze and Silver Medalist.

“We are traveling to Budapest, Hungary for the European Maccabi Games. We are taking four riders on the dressage team and two riders for the jumper team,” she said. Cord was a rider on the team in 2017 at the 20th World Maccabi Games in Israel. The team won the silver medal.

“This will be my second Maccabi Games. My favorite part of the Games is getting to meet other Jewish riders from around the world. It’s a unique experience to connect my heritage with the other biggest part of my identity which is that of a dressage rider. It is also a dream come true to compete internationally!” she said.

Equestrians have the option of bringing their own horses or borrowing them from the host country.

The European Maccabi Games will be held July 28 to Aug. 7.

This year there will also be the Pan American Games: July 5 to July 15.

The World Maccabi Games are held every four years with the Pan American and European events held two years later.
