Some folks spend the days leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas rolling out dough. Others head to their favorite bakery to get their holiday pies. At The Pie Store in Upper Montclair, customers are lining up for pies both sweet and savory.

The 12-year-old shop makes pies all year round, but Thanksgiving and Christmas are especially busy for The Pie Store. Orders start coming in for Thanksgiving and Christmas pies months before, with a closing date of about a week before the holidays to pick them up.

The Sunday through Wednesday before Thanksgiving and about three to four days before Christmas get even busier. That’s when The Pie Store puts out its special holiday menu and pies are sold on a first-come, first-served basis with no pre-orders, phone orders, email orders or special requests.

“We wanted to serve more people,” said a store employee. “We thought it would be better to do first-come, first-serve and make our most popular pies for Thanksgiving.”

This year’s holiday menu features cranberry apple lattice, apple, brandied pumpkin, key lime, chocolate mousse and mince. It marks the third consecutive year that The Pie Store has put out a holiday menu with no ordering ahead of time.

In the days leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas, the line of people starts at the door to the shop and bends along Watchung Avenue toward the NJ Transit Train overpass.

“We’ll have to line up early because it gets really crowded,” said Montclair resident Jason Patterson, 43, who shops there for a pie — usually a curry or chicken pot pie — each year for Thanksgiving.

“There’s a wonderful smell of meat cooking when you’re inside at The Pie Store because a lot of the pies have chicken, curry or some other type of meat in them. It’s something I don’t smell often but when I do, it makes me hungry.”
