BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - A  jack-knifed tractor trailer closed the right and center lanes of Route 78 east in the vicinity of exit 43, causing major delays Thursday morning.

The driver of the tractor-trailer may have suffered a medical episode as he was approaching Diamond Hill Road heading east on Route 78 when he hit a four passenger car causing serious damage. "Luckily none of the passengers were seriously injured," said Berkeley Heights Deputy Fire Chief Jim Hopkins.

After hitting the car, the tractor trailer rolled for approximately two tenths of a mile when he came to a stop and rolled backwards until the truck jack-knifed, said Hopkins.

Berkeley Heights and Watchung Fire Departments were on the scene along with Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad, Summit, Union County and Atlantic EMS. Chatham Township Fire Department and New Providence Fire Department were on stand by.
