NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - A makeshift memorial of flowers and notes have been placed on a bench on George Street where a 62-year woman who was found dead Monday.
Captain J.T. Miller told TAPinto New Brunswick that New Brunswick police officers were called to the bench outside First Methodist Church at about 10:25 a.m.
Officers found the woman unresponsive. EMS personnel arrived and determined that she was dead.
"The preliminary investigation showed no signs of foul play although the exact cause of death is pending the medical examiner's examination," Miller said via. email. "Witnesses said they spoke with the woman earlier that morning."
Police did not release the woman's identity.
Residents who said they often saw her in and around the bench paid their respects by placing red and yellow flowers on the bench. One note attached to the bench said, "Hope you are at peace now."
Others took to social media to pay their condolences. One Facebook post said the woman, whose name was apparently Christina, was German and had been homeless. One post claimed that she refused help when others twice offered to call for an ambulance that morning.
Several shopping bags - apparently belonging to the woman - were still resting on the bench late Monday morning.
The bench is right next to a bus stop and a PSE&G customer service center located in the Plaza Buildings. It's also a few hundred yards across from The Heldrich Hotel.
