NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Chants of “ No Justice, No Peace” were heard on Somerset Street where a large crowd gathered for a peaceful rally at 2 pm on Saturday.
Congressman Tom Malinowski was among the speakers. He praised the organizers and called for everyone to hold him accountable AND make sure to register to vote. Katiana Carter, Jimena Torres, Taylor Lacon, Abdon Andahur, Faith Wilson and Angelina Harrison spoke about their experiences and what can be done to promote change.
Supported by both the business community and the North Plainfield Police Department, supporters filled the street from Somerset School to Borough Hall and beyond.
“The North Plainfield Police Department is aware of the planned student protest scheduled for Saturday. We support the first amendment and the right to assemble peacefully. The North Plainfield Police officials have worked with the event organizer to keep the event safe and peaceful.”
Heard on the street:
Thanks to all those who came out today!
I’m so glad I went to this protest and that all from various backgrounds and race were there.
Proud of my town!
Kudos to the organizers!!!
A wonderful show of support and solidarity.
I believe all should take a knee for 8 minutes and 46 seconds to know the true impact of what George Floyd endured.
The crowd began to dispense after 4 pm and many walked down Watchung Avenue.
