BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - New Jersey State Police are conducting a fatal investigation at the scene of a one car accident Sunday morning on I-78 east bound at mile marker 43.2. 

The Berkeley Heights Fire Department was dispatched at 5:01 a.m., said Deputy Chief Jim Hopkins. Members from Rescue 1 used the Jaws of Life on two patients trapped in vehicle.  It was reported the passenger was killed from car impacting tree. 

Hopkins said the conditions at the time were heavy rain and the temperature was 34 degrees.

The Berkeley Heights Fire Department was assisted by Watchung Fire Department to help shut down the highway.

The Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad was on scene providing patient care.
