Camp Riverbend sent the following announcement on Monday:
It is with great sadness we announce that our father, patriarch and Camp Riverbend co-founder, Harold Breene, died peacefully last night surrounded by his family. He was 94 years old.
Harold was a giant; a husband of 65 years to Marianne, who predeceased him in 2017, a father of four, grandfather of ten and great-grandfather of five. He was a lifelong educator who was, and will remain, a legend in the camping community. As generations of students, campers and staff know well, he was a force to be reckoned with and an inspiration to all of us to live our dreams, as he did, with energy and integrity.
Since founding Camp Riverbend in 1962, he has been our driving force and inspiration. Campers and staff from this past season have fond memories of his “high fives” and daily lunches in the pavilion.
We will miss him as we strive to carry on his legacy and spirit in the traditions that have made Camp Riverbend the special place that it is.
We will be receiving visitors on Thursday, May 30th, from 5 pm to 8 pm.
We will be holding a celebration of Harold’s life on Friday, May 31st from 4-5 pm, with visitation immediately following. In our father’s honor, we will be wearing our Riverbend gear on Friday for the celebration. If you are so inclined, we would welcome guests to do the same!
Of course, all events will be at Camp Riverbend, 116 Hillcrest Rd., Warren, NJ.
