WATCHUNG, NJ - The Watchung Borough Board of Education voted on Wednesday to approve $14,790 to address “the Asbestos Situation at Bayberry Elementary School.”
Interim Superintendent of the Watchung Borough School District, Stephanie Bilenker, was notified of the existence of asbestos tiles in room C-124 at the Bayberry Elementary School earlier this month and was advised by the Board’s environmental consultant, AHERA Consultants, Inc., that the asbestos tiles needed to be abated.
Bilenker recommended to the board, and the board approved, entering into the following contracts on an emergent basis to remediate the asbestos condition and the causes of it:
1. AHERA Consultants, Inc., in the amount of $5,790, to prepare the scope of work for the abatement and to oversee the remediation work; and
2. NARI Construction, LLC, of Lincoln Park to remove carpeting and approximately 900 square feet of asbestos tile and mastic per NJAC 5:23-8 in an unoccupied building in the amount of $9,000.
The work is scheduled to be done during spring break.
Some additional classrooms were also found to contain asbestos tiles, however, they were deemed safe at this time. Planning for remediation will be discussed in the district's facility plan, they said at the meeting.
