“We picked up a tremendous victory over the top ranked team in Rhode Island,” said WHRHS head coach Justin Salton. “It was delightful to win a championship with Mr. and Mrs. Bottoni In attendance.’

The tournament honors Anthony Bottoni and Juan Carlos Cruz, and the championship game was played on the 20th anniversary of Anthony Bottoni’s death.

Anthony Bottoni played football, basketball and track at Watchung Hills Regional High School and graduated in 1997. He was killed in an automobile crash in Summit, N.J on Dec. 28, 1999. At the time, he was a starting offensive guard on the Catholic University Cardinals’ football team.

Juan Carlos  Cruz was a beloved Spanish teacher and junior varsity soccer coach at Watchung Hills who died in 2016 at the age of 40.
