WAYNE, NJ – In yesterday’s daily update, Wayne Mayor Chris Vergano announced the first day since he began his updates a Zero-Zero day.  Zero deaths and Zero new positive cases reported to him by the state of New Jersey for Sunday, May 31.

This was a landmark day, but not an indication that the pandemic is over It was just a day we have all been waiting for; a day worth celebrating.

The last 11 days (from May 20 – June 1) the Mayor reported single digit positive numbers for a total of 59 new cases and an average of 5.36 new cases per day.

The previous 11 days (from May 11 – May 21) it was all double digits for a total of 186 new cases, and an average of 16.91 new cases.  That is a big drop!

When Mayor Vergano announces new positive cases, the dates of testing are all over the map. For example, on May 18, twenty-two new positive cases were reported but the Mayor said 20 of those were from long-term care facilities and the dates of testing for these cases were between April 27 and May 11.  This makes it difficult to track these numbers accurately, which is why looking at trends and moving averages paints a better picture.

These charts show the number of positive cases and the number of deaths for Wayne Township residents with both daily numbers and seven-day moving averages. This confirms what we have all been hoping for: a significant decrease in both new cases and reported deaths.  Either, our social distancing is working, or we are passed the worst of this pandemic. Or both, or the warm weather is slowing down the virus.  Nobody knows and only time will tell.

For now, the glow of the sun has risen above the horizon and the darkness that has lain over us these past few months is slowly dissipating. Above we begin to see blue sky and it lightens our hearts. Our hope is that this darkness continues its banishment, and we can rise up from our isolated, solemn slumber and join together in peaceful security.
